DR TOMMY PENG
Dr Tommy Peng is a neuroscientist from the translational hearing research team at the Bionics Institute of Australia. Tommy has a formal background in biomedical engineering (BSc/MSc, Washington University in St Louis, USA) and computer systems engineering (PhD, University of Auckland, New Zealand), with expertise in signal processing, psychophysics, electrophysiology, and machine learning. While in the USA, Tommy designed and implemented speech-in-noise hearing tests on smartphone and tablet devices to improve accessibility of hearing assessments. Currently, Tommy’s research program aims to improve hearing outcomes in cochlear implant users by identifying and addressing recipient-specific neural problems, such as intra-cochlear neural dead regions. Tommy hopes that the newly developed diagnostic tests and techniques will one day become a part of the standard cochlear implant tuning process in clinics. Outside of the lab, you can find Tommy on the badminton court, fishing at the pier, and testing new recipes in the kitchen.
