PROF PETER FRIEDLAND

Professor Peter Friedland is a leading ear, nose and throat surgeon in Australia and a celebrated teacher in this field of medicine.

At the University of Western Australia, he holds the prestigious Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation chair of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and a professorship at the University Notre Dame.

He helped build the largest adult public Cochlea and ear implant service in the state of Western Australia, leads multidisciplinary ENT and Head and Neck Cancer research and is dedicated to rural, remote and Indigenous healthcare.

Apart from undertaking humanitarian missions outside Australia, Peter also serves a squadron leader and specialist surgeon in the Royal Australian Airforce (Reserves).

Since arriving in Australia in 2009, he has published more than 70 papers, delivered over 150 presentations at national and international conferences and won 15 teaching awards.

Before he left South Africa in 2009, he had looked after President Nelson Mandela’s hearing for almost a decade. His recently published a book “A Quiet Time with President. A doctors story of learning to listen”
